Video: Ball Python strikes

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

Just a quick video of one of the authors pet Ball Python’s striking a frozen/thawed mouse. Before attempting to feed it is a good idea to “pre-scent” the room for a good 20 to 30 minutes to get the snakes in the mood.

In the video you’ll notice the mouse is being held with a pair of tongs by the scruff of the neck. This is because once you’ve pre-scented a room snakes brains are engaged to strike, kill, and eat. Having your hand in the snake’s enclosure could expose you to a potential strike. With something the size of a Ball Python this isn’t much of a concern for an adult, but a small child could have problems. Not to mention it’s just a good habit to get into. Imagine instead of a Ball Python it is a 15 foot Reticulated python.
