Heat Pit
A heat sensing organ that crotalids (pit vipers) and some boids (e.g. Ball Pythons) have. In boids there are normally several along the lips; in crotalids there is usually one pit on each side of the head between the nostril and the eye. This organ allows the snake to detect the difference in heat between the air and potential prey providing an infrared image of sorts.
