Why do snakes have forked tongues?
In spite of the old myth a snake's tongue is not forked so it can sting you with it. The tongue has a fork in it because the Jacobson's organ in the roof of it's mouth has two pits which the snake needs to deposit particles from the air into so it can "smell". Over time animals, mostly reptiles and lizards, which make exclusive use of this method of smelling developed split tongues.
